You've been having some urinary symptoms and you return to my office to review your recent test results. There were no bacteria present in your urinalysis, so the antibiotics I previously prescribed have offered no relief, however another test came back abnormal and I think we should investigate further with a prostate biopsy. I'll get you scheduled in and will see you in the hospital for your procedure.

On the day of the biopsy, I make sure you are comfortable, and offer reassurance ahead of moving forward. Once you're intubated and connected to an ecg machine I get your procedure underway. I begin with a quick manual exam, using my finger to feel your lower rectum and prostate. Your prostate is especially firm, and swollen.

Next I have a nurse lubricate a rectal speculum which I insert into your anus and carefully position and open. The speculum allows me that there are no polyps in your lower rectum or swelling, which affirms we're on the right track focusing on your prostate.

As I carefully perform the procedure, using a syringe to perforate your prostate in order to collect a fine-needle biopsy. After collecting a sample I request a nurse get you cleaned up.

When all is said and done I meet you in recovery - you did great, and everything went smoothly. I'll be in touch to discuss your results once they've returned from the lab.
