Sandra arrives at College to study Maths, mistakenly believing that all those thrashings for poor or late work are behind her.
But she had not reckoned with Mr Baines. He believed in traditional ethics and, when Sandra reverts to her old ways, she is
in for a shock. He gives her a choice; ten strokes of the cane or be sent down. Sandra likes neither alternative, but one
is more palatable. So it is that she takes ten hard strokes of the cane. But her maths submission the following week is badly late.
Somehow inevitably, Mr Baines beats her again, a further six of the best. But the improvement is only temporary. Her end of term
review is pretty aweful. She has another choice; another beating or do not return next term. So it is that she has to undergo a further ten cuts of the cane before she returns home. (CA259)
