Sandra arrives at College to study Maths, mistakenly believing that all those thrashings for poor or late work are behind her.

Somehow inevitably, Mr Baines beats her again, a further six of the best. But the improvement is only temporary. Her end of term
review is pretty aweful. She has another choice; another beating or do not return next term. So it is that she has to undergo a further ten cuts of the cane before she returns home. (CA259)
